Essex Mental Health Independent Inquiry’s statement in response to Dispatches episode ‘Hospital Undercover: Are Our Wards Safe?’ which aired on 10 October 2022

Last night’s broadcast was both concerning and deeply upsetting to watch. In the immediate aftermath of the broadcast our thoughts are with those affected by the issues it raised and their families and loved ones. Our hearts go out to the families of those who have died and are now living with the devastation.

The programme highlights many of the issues that are within the scope of this Inquiry and which we are in the process of investigating. The Essex Mental Health Independent Inquiry was set up to investigate matters surrounding the deaths and treatment of mental health inpatients across NHS Trusts in Essex between 2000 and 2020.

We are committed to looking at all evidence, including any new evidence from numerous sources, including television programme makers. The Inquiry is independent of government, EPUT, CQC, and the NHS, and will continue to take a robust approach to any evidence uncovered.
